The initiative is the brainchild of Lynda Irvine, owner of Lynda’s Music Studio, who conceived and oversees the project to give under-18 musicians a real-world platform.

“I created NextGen Noise because I was looking for a way to give talented and hard-working emerging musicians professional opportunities so they can learn what is involved in organising and performing in a professional music event,” Lynda said. 

“There are very few opportunities in the Far North that can provide this sort of experience, so I thought I would create one. I am so happy it has become an annual event.”

Under Lynda’s mentorship, the young crew is actively involved in running the entire show from the ground up, learning the ropes of expert sound, lighting, and stagecraft.

“It is so important for emerging musicians who are looking at a career in music to understand all the aspects that go into organising a professional gig,” Lynda explained. 

“From picking an event name to booking venues, sound engineers, photographers, and learning how to advertise.”

Award-winning mentorship

That drive to create well-rounded musicians stems from Lynda’s long-standing dedication to her students. 

Hitting the right keys locally, she was previously recognised for her work as a piano teacher with a Yamaha Break Out Award, and was an integral part of the committee behind the fundraising and purchase of the grand piano that was gifted to Douglas Shire community.

Seeing the benefits music brings to her students' lives, Lynda feels grateful to have spent a long career doing what she loves. 

“I involve my students in many varied music activities because you never know what opportunities are going to come available to them in their lifetime,” Lynda said. 

“The willingness and enjoyment of trying new experiences in public is a large part of developing confidence and self-esteem.”
